At Shokudo Maeno, a chef-owned casual restaurant serving Japanese home-style cooking, food is made with care and an uncompromising approach to flavour. Verywhere also created the brand identity in 2025, and the photography was produced to carry it: a series that keeps the chef, his hands and his ingredients at the centre, and treats every dish as the direct outcome of that care. The pictures are meant to feel like the restaurant itself, warm, unhurried and close to the counter, rather than like a catalogue of menu items.

Approach

In a home-style kitchen the cook is the brand, so the series works in two registers. Portrait and process frames stay close to the chef's hands and are lit directionally, so cooking reads as quiet craft rather than performance. Most dishes are photographed on timber in the same warm, low light, so the food and the person who made it clearly belong together; the wagyu and the live crab are lifted onto black stone so the colour of the meat and the shell carries the frame. Raw ingredients are treated with the same respect as finished plates, because the restaurant's promise rests on what goes in before anything is served. The claypot rice is shot as a family, same pot, same board, same angle, so the range reads as one idea.

Execution

Each dish was photographed as it is served, and the frames share one vocabulary of timber, ceramics and folded paper, which holds the series together across plates and process. Flame, steam and smoke are held in the frame, so the grill and stock-pot pictures carry the heat of the kitchen. Landscape frames give the platters room to breathe, while portrait frames stay tight on hands and heat, which is why the series alternates between the two.
